Originally an inline skater from North Carolina, Joey Cheek quickly mastered the ice and became a world-record-setting speed skater. In 2002, at the Salt Lake City Olympics, Cheek won his first-ever international medal – a bronze in the 1,000 meter. Over the next four years he won more than 25 World Cup and World Championship medals, a gold and silver in the 2006 Olympic Games, and he joined Eric Heiden and Dan Jansen to become the first American male sprint world champions.
Joey Cheek is Co-founder and President of Team Darfur, an international coalition of athletes committed to raising awareness about and bringing an end to the crisis in Darfur, Sudan. Cheek's efforts after the 2006 Olympics to help stop the atrocities in Darfur raised over $1.5 million dollars and resulted in him being named the inaugural Heisman Humanitarian Award and one of TIME's 100 most influential people.
Cheek graduated from Princeton University in 2011 after studying economics and Chinese. He currently lives in Colorado Springs, CO where he works as a brand ambassador and sports marketing consultant to Olympic sponsors and other corporations.
