The U.S. Olympic Museum has been elected to the prestigious Olympic Museums Network (OMN), receiving the designation Sept. 25 at the Olympic Museums Network (OMN) 10th General Assembly in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada.
“The U.S. Olympic Museum is honored to be a recognized member of the Olympic Museums Network,” U.S. Olympic Museum Chairman Dick Celeste said. “This is an important step in our process to create a timeless institution that will not only honor U.S. Olympians and Paralympians, but honor the spirit of the Olympic Games themselves.”
The Olympic Foundation for Culture and Heritage Director and Olympic Museums Network Chairman Francis Gabet said “Having the U.S. Olympic Museum on board is a great source of excitement as it represents one of the leading countries in the world in terms of sport and Olympics. I send my best wishes to the managing and operating teams for the realization of this tremendous project and look forward to visiting the U.S. Olympic Museum in Colorado Springs, CO, in 2018.”
U.S. Olympic Museum Vice-Chair Andie Doyle and Museum and Content Developer Kathy Barrie, of Barrie Projects, gave the pre-election presentation to 50 OMN members representing 20 countries.
The OMN, founded in 2006 in Lausanne, Switzerland, is a 27-member multi-national organization united in creating a unique platform to increase promotion of the values of Sport and Olympism. Its members work together by sharing useful synergies to develop meaningful programs, cooperate on common issues, and improve efficiencies associated with acquisitions, curation, conservation and restoration.
Membership also grants the U.S. Olympic Museum the opportunity to exhibit rare Olympic artifacts from The Olympic Museum collection in Lausanne. These loaned pieces will enhance the Museum’s exciting and ever-fresh exhibits and encourage repeat visits. The Olympic Museum creates as many as three major traveling exhibitions for each Olympic Games.
The U.S. Olympic Museum is one of seven organizations elected to the OMN in 2015. Other new members are: Peruvian Olympic Museum (PER); Nanjing Olympic Museum (People’s Republic of China); Slovak Olympic and Sport Museum (Slovakia); Athens Olympic Museums (Greece), Nagano Olympic Museum (Japan), IRIRAN Museum (Islamic Republic of Iran).
The 11th OMN General Assembly will take place in October 2016 at The Olympic Museum, Lausanne, Switzerland.
